Grade Level Expectations

In fifth grade, students learn to apply previously learned concepts to grade level standards in order to reach a higher level of understanding. For example, in Language Arts, they are expected to leave knowing how to analyze and tell what they think will happen in a story as well as be able to draw conclusions. They are expected to write clear and comprehensible multiple paragraph essays that include a thesis statement, topic sentence, and a well written conclusion. In Mathematics, students are taught how to apply previously learned arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) to fractions, decimals, and positive and negative numbers. Among other concepts, they are also taught to find decimals and percents that are the same as a fraction (example .50 is 50% or 1/2 of a whole).
